Gray Matter is a major component of the central nervous system and includes regions of the brain involved in muscle control, sensory perception, memory, emotions, and speech. Megan and Brett are in their mid twenties and both live with Down Syndrome. They have been living in a house sponsored by Lifes WOrc, an organization that seeks to provide individuals living with specific disabilities a certain life of independence while receiving the care and supervision necessary. They live in the house with three other individuals and have forged a very close bond with each other and the other members of the house. Several studies conclude that between 86% and 92% of women decide to abort their pregnancy if their prenatal testing confirmed Down Syndrome. There’s a bond that this couple shares that is incredible, and the raw emotion and genuine connection between them is even more astounding- but the still prevalent loneliness is a major and significant part of each of their lives. Even though their lives have what some would consider chaos, it’s a different kind of structure than what many are used to. How Megan and her boyfriend manage is beyond me and that only intensifies my respect and admiration. They also have a better social life than I do, so I’m real jealous about that.
